Abstract
Student understanding to the materials being taught are crucial. The quality of the resources used in teaching-learning activities become one important point to have. Good exercises and activities would be a good help to ensure the student understanding of the materials, it helps the students practice their skills and understand the materials they learned. Because of the importance of having good exercise questions, the textbooks published by the government have been analyzed to determine whether the exercise questions utilize Low Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) or High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This research aims to find out the level of thinking used in reading sections tasks and exercises in the book “English for Nusantara: Grade 7”. The study used qualitative descriptive approach. The finding revealed that the reading sections in the textbook, predominantly focused on Lower-Order Thinking Skills, with a significant majority of questions categorized under the C1 (Remember) and C2 (Understand) levels of the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. Out of 121 items 69 items fall under the C1 (Remember) level, followed by the C2 (Understand) level with 37 items This pattern aligns with previous studies that got similar result. This implies that while the current curriculum effectively builds basic comprehension and recall abilities of the students by having the majority of the questions at lower-order levels of thinking skill, the usage of higher-order levels of thinking is far lower than the lower-order thinking skills.
