Abstract

In the English language, one of the productive skills to deliver ideas is writing. Writing is a common way in daily life to deliver information or ideas to the readers. In order to compose good writing, several components are required to build whole meanings, one of them is grammar. Grammar is a structure of words in sentences which produce whole meanings as a byproduct. Not having the correct grammar in sentences can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Therefore, the researcher assumed that there is correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability. To find out if there is a positive correlation between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability, the researcher conducted correlational research with the population of the eleventh graders. The instruments used are grammar test and writing test. First, the researcher used Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to select the sample. Then, the researcher conducted a tryout test to see the validity, reliability and item analysis of the instrument. After that, the researcher administered the grammar test and writing test to the chosen sample of eleventh graders and analyzed the score using Pearson Product Moment formula. According to the analysis, the correlation coefficient score is 0.72, which is considered to be a high or strong correlation. This means that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a positive and strong correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability. Also, having good grammar mastery will help learners to be able to compose good writing.
