Abstract

This case study investigates the receptive and productive vocabulary mastery of Grade 9 students in a private school in Surabaya. The study aims to prove that the book used by the teacher have an impact on the receptive and productive vocabulary abilities in it with a standard value of 75, both in recognize (receptive) and use (productive) vocabulary in various context using a quantitative approach, post-test only design method. The research combines the students’ vocabulary range and depth, vocabulary tests, and writing samples. Results indicate a notable gap between receptive and productive vocabulary, with students generally recognizing more words than they can actively use. Factors such as classroom instruction and learner motivation were found to influence vocabulary acquisition. In the final results, it was found that there was a significant difference between the sample average and the value used for comparison, as well as the results between the receptive and productive vocabulary questions which had a very clear significant difference. They were all quite far below the average value.
