Abstract
English language learning presents challenges for Indonesian students due to differences in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Listening is a fundamental skill necessary for effective communication and language proficiency. Understanding the importance of listening in language acquisition, this study aims to investigate students' difficulties in listening courses and explore the strategies they employ to overcome these challenges. The research focuses on understanding the reasons behind students' difficulties in listening, their personal approaches to addressing these difficulties, and the effectiveness of their chosen strategies. By identifying and addressing these difficulties, the study aims to provide valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers to enhance the teaching and learning of listening skills in real educational settings. The study utilizes a qualitative research approach, employing questionnaires and interviews with students from the Batch of 2021 at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University. Through data analysis and interpretation, the study identifies various barriers that hinder listening comprehension, including belief barriers, material barriers, habitual barriers, information processing barriers, English proficiency barriers, strategic barriers, and affective barriers. The research objectives are twofold: first, to determine the difficulties students encounter during listening activities, and second, to explore the strategies they employ to overcome these difficulties. The findings of this study will contribute to the field of English language education by providing insights into the challenges faced by students and effective strategies for improving listening skills. Qualitative research methods are employed to explore and understand the meanings attributed by students to the social and human problems encountered in listening courses. The research involves data collection through questionnaires and interviews, followed by inductive analysis to identify common themes and interpret the meaning behind students' experiences. The research subjects consist of students from the Batch of 2021 who have completed the Intermediate & Advanced Listening class in the English Language Education Study Program at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University. The study includes 21 students from this cohort. By investigating students' difficulties and strategies in improving their listening skills, this study aims to provide valuable insights for educators, curriculum designers, and language learners in the effective development and enhancement of listening abilities in the context of English language education.
